According to the customer, the HDMI port on this aftermarket tuner—manufactured by Mini Maxx by H & S (now out of business) and similar to the Bully Dog tuner model 40420 or 40428—had been broken. A temporary fix with crazy glue was attempted, but as microsoldering is essential for any modern motherboard repair, a proper repair was necessary.
Current HDMI Status
When the board arrived, the HDMI port was fully broken. Two legs were stuck in the throughholes with some damage to the pads, and the HDMI port had completely broken off the board.
Repair Challenges
This repair was particularly challenging because there is an LCD on the opposite side that is not easily detachable. The LCD is soldered on, and the flex cable connecting it to the motherboard is in a delicate position. Removing the cable risks further damage, so extra care was needed during cleanup.
Cleanup Process
We used gentle hot air on the board to raise its temperature, ensuring the LCD remained undamaged while improving soldering conditions—cool boards tend to produce poor joints. The broken legs were removed using suction, and the pads were meticulously cleaned, tinned, and fluxed.
Installation and Inspection
After the cleanup, we obtained a new HDMI port from our supplier. The new port was installed and all legs were carefully soldered in place. A detailed inspection confirmed that the installation was precise and secure.
Assembly
With the new port in place and thoroughly inspected, the device was fully reassembled. The tuner is now ready to be returned to service.
